![]() Settler's House showing the rain porch. | Once the farm became profitable, the settlers could build a better home. The Settler’s House, c1812, is made with both hand-hewn timbers and sawn boards. It also features a rain porch. This type of porch is indigenous to Sumter and Williamsburg District and is characterized by the overhang that extends beyond the porch supports to provide additional shelter from the elements. |
The interior of the Settler’s House is more comfortable than the Log Cabin. The raised floor and higher ceiling keep the building warmer in the winter and cooler in the summer. The house also has more furnishings. There is a rope bed for sleeping, a table for dining and a cupboard for storage. | ![]() |
