The Log Cabin

|
 | The Log Cabin represents the first type of building erected by newly arrived settlers. Since sawmills were not yet operating, colonists used logs chinked with mud for their homes. The log cabin is a simple building with a dirt floor, a low ceiling, and a sleeping loft. |
| Unlike houses today, there is a scarcity of furniture. Beds would have been little more than large cloth bags stuffed with leaves or moss. Candles made out of tallow, animal fat, and/or wax provided light and heat came from the fireplace. Other items could be stored in the sleeping loft or in a separate building. |
