The Blacksmith Shop

Adjacent to the Loom House is the Blacksmith Shop. Blacksmiths produced hinges, cooking utensils, animal tack, tools, and a myriad of other items for the homestead. To make these items, blacksmiths used heat and strength. They pumped the bellows to fan the fire and increase the heat of the coals. Once hot, the smiths placed a piece of iron into the coals and heated it until the metal was pliable. Then they used a hammer and anvil to beat the hot iron into the necessary shape. After the metal was shaped, they allowed it to cool.
