The Barn

The barn houses our woodworking equipment. Woodworkers used chisels, adzes, axes, rasps, and other tools to shape pieces of wood into needed items. Our interpreters made many of the benches and wooden utensils seen in this exhibit. Next to the barn are the animal pens. Many animals on a homestead would have roamed free. Even in town, contemporary accounts of Sumter talk about pigs and cattle roaming through the streets. Settlers confined others, like horses, mules, and oxen, to pastures and stables.

Luke and Colin enjoy their pasture.
