In the populous northern colonies, it was difficult to acquire land. Earlier colonists had already claimed the best areas and the British goverment restricted immigration to western lands occupied by Native Americans. Large landowners deeded acreage to their children and people with money could buy farms from land speculators. For others, land ownership was an increasingly distant dream. |
