The Rebels
Few South Carolinians wanted war with Great Britian. Only those with the most extreme views wanted independence. At first, the rebels wanted the British Parliament to repeal various tax laws passed upon the colonies. As time went on, the rebels began to believe that the only way to protect the colony from unjust laws was by getting the British to agree that the colonial legislatures were equal to Parliament and subordinate only to the King. Since this was completely unacceptable to the British, the rebels slowly but surely began to edge toward war. Even after fighting was imminent and independence the only solution, many of South Carolina's rebel leaders felt only sorrow at the breaking of their ties with England. |
