Matthew and Mary filed this land grant in 1756. Notice on the detail image how all the land around this plot was "vacant land". Also note the markers that colonial surveyors depended on. Their markers included oak and pine trees as well as stakes. | |

Directed to William De Brahm Esqr late Surveyor General, who hath caused to be Admeasured unto Matthew Singleton a Tract of One hundred and Fifty Acres of Land In Craven County on the Waters of Santee at Shanks Creek Bounded on all sides by Vacant Land and hath such Forms and Marks as the above Platt represents.
