St. Mark's
Parish

St. Mark's Church -- 50kDuring the colonial period, the Anglican church was the established church of South Carolina and the colony was divided into Anglican parishes. Although there were many other religions in South Carolina, these parishes were very important to all colonists since it was in the parish that men elected their legislators. It was also in the parish that money was collected to help the poor.

The colonial legislature created St. Mark's Parish in 1757. The largest parish in the colony, it included almost half of South Carolina.
