Relying on the Law

In South Carolina in the 1760s, the government was located in Charles Town (Charleston) which was over 100 miles from the High Hills. All of the courts were also in the capital city. If something happened in the backcountry that needed to go to court, the settlers had to travel all the way to the coast. And, they had to bring witnesses and evidence with them. The system was both awkward and slow.
