Matthew Singleton
and the Settling of Sumter
| Settlers poured into the Sumter area in the decades before the Revolution. Unable to find land in more settled areas, they traveled down a path that led south from the colonies of Pennsylvania and Virginia. Whole families loaded their possessions into wagons to make the journey to South Carolina's backcountry. Imagine what these men, women, and children thought as they left behind all that was familiar to them. Were they afraid? Did they regret the lives they left behind? Or did they turn their thoughts to the future and to the home they would make in the wilderness? Come with us as we follow one family from Virginia to South Carolina. Learn how they planted crops, built a home, and began a community. We will join the family of Matthew and Mary Singleton on their journey from settlement to prosperity. |
