| Francis Marion "Nick" Moise, Jr., born in Sumter, South Carolina on January 21, 1920, entered the U.S. Army on September 7, 1942. Upon completing officer's training, the Army stationed Moise at Fort Benning, GA. After the invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 (D-Day), Moise served in the European Theatre of Operations from June 19, 1944 to January 1, 1946 as a communications specialist in the 82nd Airborne Division. Trained as a combat infantryman, Moise participated in the invasion of Holland as a glider infantryman, fought in the Ardennes during the Battle of the Bulge, participated in the Rhine offensive and served in the Army of Occupation after Germany's surrender. | ![]() Nick Moise |
| By the time of his discharge on March 6, 1946, Captain Moise had been awarded the Bronze Star, American Campaign Medal, European-African-Middle East-Campaign Medal, three Bronze Service Stars, and a Bronze Arrowhead. | |
![]() | One of four airborne divisions deployed in Europe, the "All American" 82nd Airborne included two parachute regiments, one glider regiment, and a battalion of 105 mm. Howitzers. The 82nd fought in North Africa and Europe, participating in the invasions of Italy, Normandy and Holland. The Division also fought in the Battle of the Bulge and made assault crossings at the Rhine and Elbe Rivers in Germany. In July 1945, the Army assigned the 82nd Airborne Division to the Army of Occupation in Germany. ![]() |
