The Probst Collection:
Images from the Korean War 1950-51

The Probst Collection are images taken by Navy doctor Charles R. Probst between 1950-1951 when he served with the First Marine Division. These images were part of the museum's exhibit The Korean War: The Ongoing Conflict.

On June 25, 1950, North Korean People's Army invaded the Repulic of Korea and quickly pushed the ROK army toward the sea. The capital of the ROK surrendered within 48 hours. On June 27, the United States intervened under United Nations authority and launched a counter attack against the North Koreans. The Korean War continued for the next three years until an armistice agreement brought the fighting to an end. The agreement also established a Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) between the two Koreas which is continuously guarded by American, South Korean, and North Korean soldiers.
