Louise Mellette Nettles (1910 - 1996) was the daughter of Lucy Mellette and Elias Whilden Nettles. One of five children, Louise attended Limestone College. |
The only child of Jenny Lynn Cooper and Hugh McFaddin McLaurin, Hugh McFaddin, Jr. became a pioneer in the peach industry in South Carolina and established himself as one of the top growers. He eventually became Director of the SC Peach Growers Council and served on the Sumter District 2 School Board for twenty years. |
Louise and Hugh, Jr. were married in an evening ceremony on June 7, 1933 at Wedgefield Baptist Church. Immediately afterwards, the newlyweds left for a honeymoon trip to Columbia, only to be followed by many of their friends and family. Upon arrival to their hotel, Louise and Hugh found that a note had been forwarded to the hotel instructing the clerk "to take good care of them. They've never been to the city before". Louise and Hugh were then greeted with cheers and applause by their friends who had also made the trip to the hotel - much to the surprise (and probably chagrin) of the honeymooners. |
 | Louise and Hugh were married for sixty-three years and had two children, Jennie Linn McLaurin Duffie and Hugh McFaddin McLaurin III, both of whom still reside in Sumter. |
