The decade of the 1930s saw the return of a more feminine figure and the romantic influence of a "Hollywood" style. Brides often wore close fitting styles of silk, lace and chiffon with long skirts, long sleeves and high necklines. This romantic style is vividly apparent in the 1933 wedding gown worn by Louise Mellette Nettles McLaurin. At the same time, some brides eschewed the newer fashions in favor of wearing their mother's gowns. With a few subtle changes, a bride could take "something old" and create their own fashion. By the late 1930s, the white wedding was firmly established. The colder white satin we are familiar with became popular, gradually ousting the ivory and cream dresses of the last century. |
